Clove oil is derived from the clove plant. It is typically picked by hand in late summer and again in winter. The buds are dried until they turn brown and left whole. They are then steam-distilled to produce the essential oil, or may also be ground into a spice.
The island of Zanzibar is the biggest producer.

As with any essential oil, dilute, dilute, dilute! Clove oil is a super potent oil, so using it quite minimally is essential.
